Five Bullets 7.22.22
This week: Updates, Foley effects, Sci-fi films & more
Happy Friday everyone! Welcome back to Circles In Space, where each Friday I share five things I found interesting. This week’s topics:
It felt like time to share some updates over on my blog. I’m working on a few things at the moment and am feeling excited to be busy. For now, though, I continue to sit at my typewriter and keep clacking away at the keys. [Check out my Substack post on writing tips and other writing content].
Ever watch a movie and wonder how they created those weird sound effects? The New Yorker recently ran a great article on the ‘dark art’ of Foley effects. Potentially for some, learning about Foley may remove some of the ‘magic’, but as an audio-oriented person, I’ve been interested in Foley since I learned of it’s role in the movie-making process. Foley can range from recording footsteps to creating the sound of a giant fire-breathing monster.
Malcolm Gladwell (Blink, Outliers) has a new podcast I’m interested to jump into: Legacy of Speed covers the story behind the 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.
Over the past decade, human feet have washed up on the shores of the Salish Sea in the Pacific Northwest (true story). When I saw Nat Geo’s article uncovering the mystery behind this phenomenon, I immediately thought of the fictional podcast TANIS. In TANIS, Nic Silver (producer Terry Miles) reports on all things weird and mysterious as it relates to a wooded area of the Pacific Northwest which has ‘special’ properties. One episode includes following up on missing feet. Terry Miles is a master of collating real-life mysteries and finding a thread straight to TANIS. Check it out if you’re into fictional podcasts. [Or check out Andrei Tarkovsky’s movie Stalker, which TANIS draws from].
The year was 1947. The United States is gripped by UFO fever - first, in June, with Kenneth Arnold then in July with the Roswell incident. Ever since Arnold coined the term ‘flying saucer’, Americans have been obsessed with aliens, UFOs, and extraterrestrials. I was mulling over these details last night as I watched the classic 1951 sci-fi film The Day The Earth Stood Still. While at first the film may seem outdated, it’s message of peace still resonates today. I am also eagerly anticipating Jordan Peele’s new film Nope, which seems to have a UFO theme.
That's all for this week! As always, thanks for reading and have a great weekend!

Until next time,
