Five Bullets 2.10.23
This week: John Willis, Bald Eagles, Brad Mehldau & more
Hello and welcome back to Circles In Space for Five Bullet Friday, where each Friday I share some interesting stuff I collected during the week.
Good morning and Happy Friday everyone! It’s a sunny and warm 55°F day here in New York City.
First and foremost, a very Happy Birthday to my brother Eric Walpole! Eric writes the Just Riffing newsletter which is full of tips and tricks for guitarists and folks who want to learn guitar. He also shares some great cover videos and listening recommendations. Eric’s most recent newsletter covered the work of jazz guitar legend John Scofield. Check it out and hit that subscribe button!
This week’s bullets:
Earlier this week I came across a 2012 National Geographic article In the Shadow of Wounded Knee which lead me to the work of photographer John Willis and his book Views from the Reservation. Wounded Knee, site of the 1890 U.S. Army massacre of Lakota, is located on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Willis’s book offers an insider’s perspective documenting the lives and history of the Oglala Lakota. Along with Willis’s photos, the book also contains family photos, heirlooms, music, and an essay by Kent Nerburn which seems to tie together the painful past and present but hopeful future of the Oglala Lakota with the natural beauty of their sacred land, the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Some New York City news:
Compost bins are popping up on street corners as part of the City’s new initiative to reduce trash.
Taking a page out of Wim Hof’s book, the New York Dippers Club jumps into the ocean off Rockaway Beach every morning.
Podcasts I’m listening to:
Geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan on the JRE discussing all things de-globalization.
UFO heavyweights Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp team up on a new podcast to discuss their efforts to share recent UFO/UAP news with the public.
Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has a new album out this week, a collection of solo piano Beatles covers titled Your Mother Should Know.
The Brooklyn Public Library’s LitFilm festival runs throughout next week. Hosted at the Central Library’s Dweck Center, the festival will screen documentaries and host discussions on writers including Pauli Murray, Joyce Carol Oates, Salman Rushdie, Robert Caro & more.
Got something to share? Leave me a comment! I’m always on the lookout for something new to dive into.
That's all for this week!
As always, thanks for reading and have a great weekend.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Very interesting topics this week.
