Five Bullets 8.29.25
Greatest Hits
Good Morning and Happy Friday Friends:
I’m on vacation this week so I’m sending a special greatest hits edition of Circles In Space. I took a look back through my archive to find a few of my favorite bullets and blog posts and also some content you’ve enjoyed the most.
This newsletter wouldn’t be possible without you, the reader, and a huge thank-you if you’ve sent me stuff to check out!
What’s your favorite greatest hits album?
My favorite greatest hits is The Best of Led Zeppelin: Early Days and Latter Days.
But Led Zeppelin never released singles so instead of number-one hits the album is a selection of tunes from the band’s discography. Early Days covers Led Zeppelin I to IV while Latter Days covers Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, Presence and In Through The Out Door.
I’ve had this double-CD album since middle school. I can remember listening to it on family summer camping trips. When I started getting serious with drums, I got really into John Bonham’s playing. I hung onto the CD during my iPod era burning the discs into my digital library. Since then the CD has lived in my car.
A greatest hits isn’t an album, it’s a playlist of all the best stuff from your favorite band. The Best of Led Zeppelin was responsible for turning me into a Zeppelin fan by pointing me towards the band’s discography, so I went back and listened to all of their albums. That’s what the best greatest hits do. One, it’s a playlist of only the hits, nothing extra. Second, they let you know where to look if you want to go deeper.
Five Bullets: Greatest Hits.
The first place to start is my Welcome To Circles In Space page. There you’ll find my table of contents which contains my writing on books, music, history and more. If you like what you see check out the free zine, a guidebook to get you started with Circles In Space.
This newsletter and anything else I’ve written wouldn’t be possible without my journaling practice which focuses my thoughts, keeps me accountable, and helps me track my day. Check out how How I Journal and How I Take Notes.
Ever wonder what was on Shackleton’s List when he saved his crew from freezing and starvation? How can a high-rise building serve as the backdrop for a surrealist dystopia? If aliens visited earth would we even know?
For all my New Yorkers, some local history on Barren Island, Fort Tilden, and Edgar Allen Poe.
And finally, the best of Five Bullets: My first post on May 27, 2022 covered Glenn Curtiss, Bernhard Lang, cave paintings, a mysterious mathematician and The Revenant. Here’s what was capturing my attention in August 2022. The most liked posts: Five Bullets 11.3.23 and celebrating my two-year Substack anniversary.
