Five Bullets 6.21.24
Summer Projects, Elephants, Watches & more
Good Morning & Happy Friday!
It’s a warm morning here in New York City. We’re in the middle of a heat-wave with temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s today.
When I’m working on a project, or multiple projects it can sometimes feel like I’ve got one of those detective investigation boards from the movies in my head. I’m trying to connect the dots, put things together, look for clues, and hopefully, break the case. Sometimes it’s helpful to take a step back and re-evaluate. That’s what I did this week and it was a reminder to take it slow, put in the work daily and keep my eye on the big picture.
What are you in the middle of right now? How do you track, visualize, organize and plan your projects?
Bullets this week:
Animals: Elephants call each other by name. Researchers using an artificial intelligence algorithm and recorded playback determined that elephant calls from two herds in Kenya contained a name-like component intended for a particular receiver. The study shows that elephants don’t simply mimic each other’s sounds and instead apply a ‘name’ to others. Elephants were able to identify calls addressed to them and ignore others while older adults typically used these name-like calls over long distances to communicate to younger elephants.
Music: Summer is here and so are outdoor concerts! If you’re in the New York City area, be sure to check out free shows from Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park, Central Park’s Summerstage, and music in city parks. Also - rock band The Black Keys recently cancelled their summer arena tour, opting for something “more intimate”. Here’s some speculation on why arena tours aren’t selling enough tickets.
NYC: TIL the borough of Manhattan has an official topographer who maintains the boroughs maps, street addresses and building information. Hector Rivera works in borough president Mark Levine’s office and uses maps dating back to the 1700s to help city agencies address building problems.
Watches: Having become interested in watches recently, learning about John Lennon’s stolen Patek Phillipe 2499, gifted to him by Yoko Ono, was a strange and interesting read. The article’s search begins with a photo taken by Bob Gruen of Lennon wearing the watch in 1980. Currently the watch is in Switzerland pending litigation to determine it’s rightful owner.
Writing: In this week’s blog post June Updates, I wrote about my ongoing projects, including reading, writing, and more.

I call those "Crazy Walls" because the character in the movies who makes one of those is always a bit unhinged. Man I love a good Crazy Wall! I hope you're having a good summer, Keith.
