Five Bullets 5.9.25
Keith Haring, Louis Cole, Kosmos & more.
Good Morning and Happy Friday friends.
This morning is cool and rainy here in New York City, and it looks like this month we’re making up for the rain we missed in April.
A Happy (early) Mother’s Day to the moms out there!
Here’s five bullets capturing my attention this week:
Art: Keith Haring created the logo for Best Buddies a non-profit organization which works toward “ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” Here’s some background on Keith Haring’s logo. I noticed the logo when I opened my jar of Teddie peanut butter which helps support Best Buddies (it’s also delicious).
History: What was the Cold War? Why was it called the Cold War? Are we in a new one? Historian Dr. Michael Kimmage answers your questions in this Wired video. (Video sound by a close friend and reader!)
Music: Back in December I shared musician Louis Cole’s Amoeba records picks. This week I wrote about the albums in a blog post: What’s Louis Cole Listening To? Check out how Stevie Wonder, Boards of Canada, and Herbie Hancock have influenced the electro-funk/pop musician.
Space: A Soviet spacecraft is falling back to Earth this weekend. Kosmos-482 launched from the U.S.S.R in 1972 as part of the Soviet Venera missions to land a robotic craft on Venus but due to a malfunction the craft has been orbiting Earth for 50 years. Kosmos was mostly forgot about until it was re-identified by researchers years later.
TV: Tsunami: Race Against Time covers the terrifying details of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the deadliest in recorded history. The tsunami, caused by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake, affected 14 countries and over 220,000 people lost their lives. This series isn’t for the faint-of-heart but gave me a better understanding of the enormous scale of this natural disaster.
That’s all for this week! Have a great weekend.
-Keith

Have you ever tried peanut butter, banana, and oatmeal for breakfast?
Thanks for the Tsunami show recommendation, Keith. It's very good, I'm almost finished with it.
