Five Bullets 3.21.25
Funky Drummer, Notes, James Webb & more.
Good morning and happy Friday friends.
This morning is a cool and windy but sunny morning here in New York City. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying these early days of Spring.
For the past three weeks I’ve posted twice-weekly, a first for the newsletter, and next week I’ll be closing out the month with another blog post. In case you’re wondering, I haven’t been publishing these posts to your inbox. If you’d like to read them when they’re published, follow me on Substack or read the post in Friday’s newsletter.
If I can keep up this twice-a-week publishing schedule, I may push these to your email in the future but since I’m only figuring out if this is a viable publishing scheduling, I’d rather not spam your inbox!
Here’s five bullets which captured my attention this week:
Music: The Funky Drummer break has been sampled over 1,300 times so even if you don’t know who Clyde Stubblefield is chances are that you’ve probably heard this groovy, syncopated beat. This week I saw a clip promoting a petition for inducting Stubblefield into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The clip is from the upcoming documentary Give The Drummer Some exploring Stubblefield’s impact on music. Here’s a video on how the Funky Drummer changed hip-hop.
Notes: I love reading about how people take notes so when a reader asked for some recommendations I wrote about How I Take Notes with some links to other methods I’ve found helpful. Let me know what works for you!
NYC: Get a portrait of your dog taken by Photoville and the Wet Nose Pawject at the Dumbo Archway where the portraits will be projected onto the BQE/Manhattan Bridge Anchorage!
Outdoors: “To be lost is a rare experience these days,” writes Doug Bock Clark. 30 Hours in a hurricane on a race with no course sounds fun right? Adventure racing involves teams charting their own routes over 120 miles of wooded forest to locate checkpoints en route to the finish. Navigation “turns adventure racing from just a physical challenge into a mental one”, a reminder of how important navigating was for hunter-gatherers, a skill most of us haven’t learned or need to use.
Science: The James Webb Space Telescope has made some interesting finds lately including these photos of a star being born, a solar system forming, and gas giant planets 130 light years away. What other mysteries will the telescope discover?

That’s all for this week! I really enjoy getting this newsletter out each Friday. It gives me reason to dive into my interests, learn more, and share it with you. Thanks for reading.
Have a great weekend,
Keith.

I signed the petition to induct Clyde into the Hall of Fame! Also thanks for the blog on note-taking. I find this very helpful.
