Five Bullets 12.9.23
NYC Stories, Meteor Shower, Pale Blue Eye & more
Good morning and happy Friday everyone!
Welcome back to Circles in Space.
Today’s Bullets:
NYC: Calling all current and former NYC residents - share your story with the Neighborhood Stories Project! I’ve worked with the project over the past two years interviewing New Yorkers from across the five boroughs.
Movies: In Pale Blue Eye, Netflix’s adaptation of Louis Bayard’s book, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of a West Point cadet in the winter of 1830. Landor enlists the help of a poetic cadet - Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling). This entertaining murder mystery is bolstered by Melling’s excellent portrayal of Poe and the dreary-grey scenes of the beautiful Hudson Highlands. I’m looking forward to reading Bayard’s book. If you’ve already seen Pale Blue Eye, here’s a list of all the Poe references.
Music: This week I’m listening to Lettuce’s new album Live in Providence. Two live Lettuce albums in the same year!
Photography: Ormond Gigli’s Girls in the Windows keeps selling. This article explains the art market, how photos are valued and why some are more sought after than others.
Science: You’ll be able to see the Geminid meteor shower from New York City this month. Lasting from about mid-November to mid-December, the shower will reach its peak on December 13-14. A new moon will allow for better meteor visibility.

Very interesting to learn about the Poe references in the Pale Blue Eye! I loved how they included Poe's character in the movie and now that inclusion makes much more sense to me. It was also interesting to learn that he was actually a cadet at West Point.
It's amazing how Ormond Gigli's Girls in the Windows continues to defy the art market-proof that a singular, memorable image can stand the test of time. I hope the article will lead the audience to delve deeper into his work, specifically his journalism and his time shooting bullfighters in Spain.
