Five Bullets 12.5.25: iPods and New Music
What's capturing our attention: Why I'm still using my old iPod; Bandcamp Fridays; funk band Lettuce's new album; RIP Stax guitarist Steve Cropper; and Redbone.
Good Morning Friends -
December is here! I’m listening to lots of music on this chilly morning here in New York City.
Here’s what’s capturing my attention this week:
Emily White wrote an excellent post on why people are using iPods again and she was kind enough to feature my comments! I’m still using my 20 year old iPod. I wrote more on that below:
If you’re still using an iPod or prefer to download music to your phone rather than streaming, check out Bandcamp Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, the music platform waives their revenue share and gives your money directly to the artists.
My favorite funk band Lettuce has a new album out, COOK, and let me tell you, it cooks! The album features classic Lettuce grooves on Clav It Your Way and The Matador along with new sounds like the middle eastern-vibe on 7 Tribes. (My vinyl copy is on the way!)
RIP Steve Cropper, guitarist for Stax Records, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Otis Redding and many more. You might have seen him in the Blues Brothers band.
I’d heard Redbone’s Come And Get Your Love but didn’t know about the band’s indigenous roots (or the meaning of their name) until I saw this Midnight Special performance. Drummer Pat Vegas used to play with Jimi Hendrix who he said inspired them to form a band. I’ve got to watch Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World.
