Five Bullets 12.19.25: "In Hopes That Neil Peart Soon Would Be There."
What's capturing my attention: Gifts for Drummers, Music, Extrapolations, Relay, & NYC.
Good Morning Friends -
Happy Friday! There’s only ONE Friday left in 2025. Hard to believe, right? Next week I’ll be sharing the best of Five Bullets over the past year.
But first, here’s what’s capturing my attention this week:
I’ve been drumming most of my life so I love to see drummers get the recognition they deserve. That’s why I compiled this list of 10 Gift Ideas For Drummers. Show your favorite drummer some love this year!
I loved Coltrane Code’s post What Did Coltrane Read? Wenerd Weekly sat down with Lettuce’s Eric “Benny” Bloom to rap about the funk band’s new album Cook. Ken Burns met with Trackstar to talk jazz, country and American history.
Extrapolations feels like Black Mirror for climate change. The series is set in the near future as the Earth’s temperature warms well past the limits set by the 2020 Paris Agreement. I enjoyed watching but wanted something more substantial so if you’ve read any good fiction in this vein, drop me a comment below.
Relay is a gritty thriller with nods to The Conversation. Ash (Riz Ahmed) negotiates, via an anonymous text-to-voice relay service for the deaf, a resolution between whistleblower Sarah (Lily James) and the company she threatened to expose until it all goes wrong. There’s some great New York City scenes, too.
When historians noted a discrepancy with the list of New York City mayors, the NYC Department of Records confirmed that Zohran Mamdani will actually be the 112th mayor not the 111th. Mayor Matthias Nicolls served two nonconsecutive terms, the first in 1671-1672 and a second term from 1674-1675, which went unaccounted for in the official record. We’ve been counting wrong ever since!
