Five Bullets 12.15.23
Drums, NYC Parks, Archive 81 & more
Good morning and happy Friday everyone!
Welcome back to Circles in Space.
Today’s Bullets:
Music: Chad Smith, Abe Laboriel Jr., Stephen Perkins, Cindy Blackman-Santana and more discuss the role of the drummer and the drummers who pushed the envelope in the documentary Count Me In. If you’re into drums or music this is a fun watch!
NYC: Mayor Eric Adams is proposing more budget cuts for NYC Parks. Parks are essential for public health and are already chronically underfunded. Sign this petition opposing the mayor’s cuts.
Podcasts: I’ve been checking out horror podcast Archive 81 about an archive of mangled audio tapes on a mysterious apartment building. It’s interesting - weird, imaginative and aurally inventive. I’m also enjoying the Netflix adaptation (which was unfortunately cancelled after one season).
Reporting: Ghosts on the Glacier. 50 years ago eight Americans attempted to climb Aconcagua in Argentina. Janet Johnson and John Cooper died under circumstances which were never resolved. In 2020 Johnson’s camera was found on the mountain’s glacier, reigniting the story. There are elements which remind me of Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air - how the effects of high altitude can make events fuzzy. (Thanks to a friend for sending me this!).
TV: So far I’m enjoying Season 2 of The Gilded Age more than the first season. Gilded Age centers on the high society games of the city’s rich elite but also depicts how the city was shaped during this era including an episode where Emily Warren Roebling works to complete the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband Washington A. Roebling became ill.

Petition signed! Thanks for that. I don't know what I would do without NYC's parks.
