Five Bullets 1.19.24
Edgar Allen Poe, The Quiet Room, Dark Star & more
Good Morning & Happy Friday Everyone!
It’s a cold and cloudy day here in New York City with some snow forecasted for today. We ended our 700+ day without snow streak with a winter storm on Tuesday. Winter is certainly in full swing!
Here’s this week’s Five Bullets:
Birthday: Happy Birthday to Edgar Allen Poe born on January 19, 1809. Poe was of course the master of horror but also the father of the modern detective story which influenced Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Check out The Bowery Boys episode on Poe’s life in New York City. Poe lived the last years of his life in a Bronx cottage .
Books: Last week I picked up The Quiet Room, the sequel to Rabbits by
mastermind behind podcasts Tanis, The Black Tapes and Rabbits. Miles’s books are spin-offs of the Rabbits podcast which has been perfectly described as “Ready Player One meets Serial meets the television show Lost”. I’m re-reading Rabbits before diving into The Quiet Room. So far I’m enjoying all the easter eggs including references to Tanis or the Rabbits podcast.Journaling: Apple released Journal a new iPhone app. The app allows users to record journal entries with photos, videos, voice memos and more. Scheduled notifications and writing prompts are designed to help users stay ‘consistent’. Are you cultivating a journaling practice in the new year? Are you using Journal? Let me know in the comments.
NYC History: If you’re familiar with this newsletter, you’ve likely read about Fort Tilden more than once! I posted a more detailed history of the fort earlier this week.
Sound Design: In the short video Why Top Gun won the Oscar for sound sound producer Al Nelson describes how tricks like punchy edits, Shepard tones and a sample of the Roebling Suspension Bridge help bring the experimental aircraft Dark Star to life in the opening sequence of Top Gun: Maverick.
That’s all for this week!

What is Edgar Allen Poe's favorite dessert?
A tell tale tart!
