Five Bullets 1.12.24
New Year's Resolutions, Truffle Hunters, Jazz & more
Good Morning & Happy Friday Everyone!
It’s a sunny morning with blue skies here in New York City. Still no measurable snow for over 700 days!
Somehow we’re already nearing the middle of the month. In this week’s newsletter, we’ll take a look at Woody Guthrie’s New Year’s resolutions.
Do you have any resolutions for the New Year? How are you staying on track? Or do you think they’re silly? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Here’s Five Bullets from the past week:
Comedy: Fred Armisen’s Standup for Drummers is full of hilarious drumming and music-related bits as well as some laughs for a wider audience. I especially enjoyed Armisen’s impressions (Ringo, Keith Moon) and his demonstration of drumming through the decades. The Saturday Night Live and Portlandia comedian and actor drummed in bands throughout his career and is currently the drummer and bandleader of the Late Night with Seth Meyers house band.
Documentary: The Truffle Hunters follows the elder men who search for rare truffles in Piedmont, Italy. This is a look at the sometimes cutthroat truffle market and the men who are experts at finding them.
How I Get It Done: This series from The Cut highlights how successful women manage their lives. Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn unwinds after a day of writing dark thrillers by watching Gene Kelly’s Singing in the Rain. Podcaster Kelsey McKinney writes by listening to the Gone Girl soundtrack and eating sour candy for the sugar rush.
Music: This weekend is the New York City Winter Jazz Festival. Buy a marathon ticket so you can pop between venues for different acts and see incredible musicians all in the same night! Also - this past Wednesday would have been Max Roach’s 100th birthday.
New Year’s Resolutions: On New Year’s Day 1944 musician Woody Guthrie wrote a list of 33 resolutions for the new year. Among them are:
Write a song a day.
Love everybody.
Wake up and fight.
That’s all for this week!

Love the image of Guthrie’s notebook. I always like to see hand written notes and doodles from artists. Thanks for always including pictures in your newsletters!
