Five Bullets 7.28.23
This week: Fort Tilden revisited, Writing tips, Bhutan & more
Hello and welcome back to Circles In Space for Five Bullet Friday, where each Friday I share interesting stuff collected during the week.
If you’re new to Circles In Space, I wrote a bit about myself and this newsletter.
Good morning and happy Friday everyone!
Today’s forecasted to be another extraordinarily hot day here in New York City. I’ve been enjoying reading or listening to music near the breezy East River or under a tree at the park. Despite the heat, summer in the city is a wonderful time.
How are you enjoying the summer?

THIS WEEK’S TOPICS:
NYC: With frequent trips to nearby Jacob Riis Park lately, I’ve been exploring Fort Tilden again. I’ve decided it’s one of my favorite places in the city - the view from Battery Harris’s observation deck offers an outstanding 360 degree view of the NYC area, from Coney Island to the manhattan skyline and the harbor. I can even make out the odd-shaped building of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center near my hometown of Floral Park, Queens almost 20 miles away. Check out my blog post on the fort’s history, my 6.10.22 newsletter and a recent tour of the fort’s present condition.
History: On June 27, 1953 the Korean War Armistice was signed, ceasing hostilities but a formal peace agreement was never signed. On the 70th anniversary of the armistice, activists prompt for an official end to the war. Also: the Korean War in photos.
Writing: Joyce Carol Oates shared 27 Clues Into Writing Your Heart Out. Everyone has a different process but a few of her points resonated with me particularly on reading widely, keeping a journal and observing/listening intensely.
Photography: Ogyen Choling, a 14th century fortress in Bhutan which serves as manor, guesthouse and museum, is captured in this collection of beautifully detailed photos by Matt Dutile.
Music: With summer in full swing, I’ve been diving back into music that recalls the excitement of seeing live outdoor concerts or kicking back and enjoying the beach and summer sun. Disciples of Phish and The Grateful Dead, funk jam band Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s 2014 album Psychology has been on constant rotation.
That’s all for this week!
As always, thanks for reading and have a great weekend.
Until next time,
KW
